The story behind Never Settle

Written for one.
Found by strangers.

Before it was a canvas, Never Settle was a message on a Worthing wall. A few lines about love. Two pink flamingos. And an invitation to be brave enough to follow your heart.

Never Settle painted on a weathered wall in Worthing, with the Rose and Crown pub across the street and wheelie bins beneath the artwork.
Worthing, England · The street work in its everyday surroundings. From the Rebel Romeo archive.
The original Never Settle poem signed A. J. Riley, shared on the wordsmith.a.r Instagram account, over a black-and-white photograph of a couple in the rain.
The words on Instagram
@wordsmith.a.r ·

From a private diary to a public wall

It began with
the things left unsaid.

In December 2016, A. J. Riley began writing on Instagram as @wordsmith.a.r. It was a personal diary of love, loss and words for a lost love: fragments of things never said, and moments that needed to be let go.

By spring 2017, that writing was finding another home. Working in the early hours with stencils and spray paint, Riley took his poetry onto the streets of Worthing under the name Rebel Romeo. Private thoughts became words that anyone might find on their way through town.

Never Settle carries that same hope. Its closing lines leave the reader with something to take away:

“And when you do,
be brave,
follow your heart.”

Photographed by the people who found it

Through other people’s eyes.

Passersby photographed the work and shared it under #RebelRomeo. These public posts, preserved in the artist’s archive, follow the same words across the years: the paint fades, while the message remains.

Archive photographs show the street artwork. Dates refer to the shared posts.

A piece of that story.
A place on your wall.

The original Never Settle canvas brings the street design into a painted, textured composition. This framed reproduction preserves its lettering, flamingos and weathered surface in print, at approximately 1:1 scale to that original canvas.

For your own home, or for someone who needs to hear those words: a daily reminder to love fully, be brave and follow your heart.
